Summary
Operation Ganga was an evacuation mission carried out by the Indian government to rescue its citizens stranded in neighboring countries of Ukraine during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. The citizens were transported from Romania, Hungary, Poland, Moldova, and Slovakia to India with assistance from these countries. India maintained a neutral stance during the invasion.
Objective
Evacuate Indian nationals, overwhelmingly medical students, from Ukraine after the Russian invasion of February 2022.
Outcome
With Ukrainian airspace closed, evacuees crossed by land into Romania, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia and were flown home from there. Nearly 23,000 people were repatriated in about three weeks.
