Summary
Operation Sankalp is the Indian Navy's initiative aimed at ensuring the security of the regional maritime domain. The term Sankalp originates from Sanskrit and signifies the concept of "Commitment". Objective
Protect Indian-flagged vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz after attacks on tankers in the Gulf of Oman.
Outcome
A continuous naval presence since June 2019, extended in 2024 to counter drone and missile attacks on merchant shipping in the wider region.
