Summary

The Annexation of Hyderabad (code-named Operation Polo) was a military operation launched in September 1948 that resulted in the annexation of the princely state of Hyderabad by India, which was dubbed a "police action".

Objective

Compel the accession of Hyderabad State, which had declined to join either dominion after Partition.

Outcome

The state forces and the Razakar militia surrendered on 18 September 1948 and Hyderabad acceded to India. The communal violence that followed the operation was the subject of a suppressed official inquiry and remains contested.

Losses — contested

Civilian deaths in the aftermath were investigated by the Sunderlal Committee, whose report was withheld for decades; estimates in circulation vary enormously.
